There is a quiet assumption that taking your life off rented clouds is either expensive or extreme. Server racks, solar panels, living in the woods. It put me off for a year. Then I actually priced it out, and the number surprised me.
Almost all the software is free. Immich replaces Google Photos. Nextcloud replaces iCloud and Drive. Vaultwarden replaces your password manager. A Bitcoin node, Pi-hole, Home Assistant, all of it, zero pounds, all open-source. The software is free. You just need one box to run it on, bought once, instead of renting clouds every month forever.

Add up what you rent right now. iCloud, Google One, a password manager, a couple of subscriptions you forgot you had. Most people are at £15 to £30 a month without noticing. That is £200 to £360 a year, every year, for access to data you generated yourself. The sovereign version is mostly a one-time cost.
Here is the ladder I am using. Pick the rung you want and stop there. You do not have to climb the whole thing.
£0software swaps
Brave instead of Chrome. Proton instead of Gmail. Small AI models on the laptop you already own. Move your Bitcoin to a wallet you hold. Costs nothing, gets you a good way there.
£550one box
An Umbrel Home, then free: your own photos, files, passwords, network ad-block, a Bitcoin node. One purchase replaces four or five subscriptions, forever. This is the rung I would point most people at.
£1k–1.5kprivacy + home
A de-Googled phone, a proper VPN, a bit of balcony solar, a couple of blood panels you actually own.
£3k–3.5kyour own AI
A machine that runs large models locally, so your second brain never leaves the house.
£5k+the roof
Real solar and a battery. The long game, for when you own the place.

I should be straight with you. I am not writing this from a finished bunker. Most of my own stack is still on the building or want list. I tagged every tool honestly on the stack so you can see exactly where I am. I am doing this in public, rung by rung, so you can copy what works and skip what does not.
